Current Research and Research Centers

The Fisher School is a leader in cutting edge business programming, providing many opportunities to graduate students, business professionals and alumni interested in pursuing continuous knowledge enhancement.

Research Centers
To support student interest in working and studying with experts in a particular field, the Monterey Institute maintains several specialized resources.  These resources provide distinctly relevant opportunities for students to confer with experts, conduct research and have access to the latest developments in their areas of special interest.

The GLOBE Center
The Center for Globalization and Localization of Business Exports (GLOBE) provides education, consulting and research in the rapidly expanding area of business globalization and localization.  Differences in language, culture, legal regulations or business structure often require companies to make changes to their products, business processes and allocation of resources to market to target customers abroad more effectively and less expensively.

Faculty and student teams at the Center develop business plans for companies requesting localization assistance, and provide consulting and research services.  Faculty and student teams at the Center help companies assess their globalization or localization needs, develop strategies and facilitate implementations through the Center's executive development, consulting and research services.

In addition, the Center develops curricula in globalization and localization for the MBA courses and training programs, and customized business courses for students enrolled in the Masters of Translation and Localization program in the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation, as well as for students in any of the Institute's other graduate schools.

The Center for Nonproliferation Studies
Since its creation in 1989, the Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) has rapidly grown to become the world's largest non-governmental organization devoted to curbing the spread of weapons of mass destruction.  Based at the Monterey Institute, CNS also has offices in Washington, D.C. and Almaty, Kazakhstan.  Its experts, many of whom are former diplomats and government policy makers, are at the forefront in combating new proliferation challenges, including nuclear, chemical and biological weapons terrorism.  Their mission is to train the next generation of nonproliferation specialists through a unique blend of formal coursework and paid on-the-job training, whether at CNS or in a variety of international organizations and US government agencies.  Many CNS alumni currently work professionally in the nonproliferation filed at international organizations, NGOs and US government agencies such as the Departments of Commerce, Defense, Energy and State.  CNS also offers generous scholarships and positions as research assistants to qualified applicants.

Center for East Asian Studies
The Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) sponsors research, lectures and seminars on the geopolitical and international issues in East Asia.  Projects evolve as the real-world pressures and circumstances change in China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia and Russia, and include trade, investment, migration, natural resource development and environmental issues.  Current projects include examination of the participation of Japan, the US and other Pacific Rim countries in the development of Russia's Pacific Rim region and analysis of the regional security implications casued by changing demographic and economic relationships among the Northeast Asian countries.  CEAS also hosts visiting fellows conduction relevant research.

Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies
The Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies (CRES) serves as an information and resource center on Russia and the Newly Independent States (NIS) for students and faculty at the Monterey Institute, as well as the public.  With a research agenda focused on the political, social and cultural developments in the NIS region, current research topics include negotiating behavior, arms control and security issues in the Soviet successor states, and Russian nuclear regionalism.  CRES pursues many projects and research activities jointly with the Institute's Russian Studies Program and its Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS).
