Dean's Corner

The Fisher Graduate School of International Business prepares professionals to operate successfully in the global business environment of the 21st century.  Our core competencies include not only the traditional business skills, but also developing a global mindset, cross-cultural teamwork, language skills, and international business planning.

Students from around the globe join the Fisher School because they are interested in international business. Upon graduation, they become entrepreneurs, get involved with start-ups, take government or non-governmental positions, or join the global team of companies operating worldwide.

The Fisher School's MBA Program is unique.  We consider each student's background and career interests in designing his or her course of study.  For example, students with previous academic background in business
may complete the Advanced Entry MBA in one year.  Students with little or no previous business experience complete the Two Year MBA - the first year focusing on core business skills, the second year on specific ares of interest.  Other students may design their program around an assignment in the Peace Corps.

In addition to courses through the business school, MBA students are encouraged to take complementary courses in the Institute's other graduate schools in areas such as international environmental policy, international trade policy, public and non-profit management, and business localization.  The unique mix of programs and courses at the Monterey Institute prepares graduates for jobs and careers for which MBAs from most other schools do not qualify.

We strive to position our programs and curricula at the cutting edge of preparation for international business careers.  As a result, we offer new courses every year, and we continually prepare graduates for newly emerging job opportunities.  In response to current job trends we have developed courses such as Management with Internet Technology, Business Planning for Sustainability, Country and Political Risk Analysis, and International Strategic Partnerships.  Our class sizes are small, and students, faculty and staff form an intimate international learning community.  Even our career assessment and job/internship search activities are personalized for each MBA student.

The Monterey Institute provides a microcosm of the international business environment.  Business students are surrounded by other graduate students that will launch international careers as commercial diplomats, trade negotiators, interpreters, and language instructors.  About half of our student body is from overseas, and all are multilingual.  When walking across campus one overhears conversations on important global issues being discussed in many different languages.  Our campus provides a learning environment that is rich and challenging, but prepares graduates with an experience, perspective, and a network of contacts that promote success in international business.

We invite you to explore what the Fisher School has to offer.  Browse this website.  Read more about the different pathways through the MBA program.  Look at the course offerings.  Contact us with questions.  Visit our campus and find your place in our international community.  I look forward to meeting you.
